J Dilla’s Debut Solo Album ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’ Turns 25 Years Old!

On this day in 2001, Detroit visionary J Dilla officially reintroduced himself to the world. Formerly known to many as Jay Dee of Slum Village, he stepped fully into his own identity with the release of his debut solo album Welcome 2 Detroit, now celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Released through Barely Breaking Even, the 16 track project was more than a solo debut. It was a declaration. Dilla used Welcome 2 Detroit to plant a flag for his city, showcasing the texture, soul and rhythm of Detroit through his unmistakable drum patterns and warm, off-kilter grooves.
